Environmental safety and other new programs are creating excitement at Thiel College...
With five new programs and Thiel College’s welcoming and supportive community, it’s an exciting time for students at Thiel. The College’s new and innovative Environmental Safety Management degree is the only one in Pennsylvania with environmental science at its core. Students blend what is best of its nationally-recognized business department with foundations in environmental science.
The program, which enrolled its first students in the spring 2019 semester, opens the door for Thiel graduates to capitalize on growing market opportunities forecasted for Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York — the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has put that trio among the top five states expected to see the greatest job growth in the field. Environmental Safety Management graduates will be prepared for successful careers in a field with forecasted growth and high-earning potential. National labor statistics predict the industry will grow between 8–11 percent by 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. The bureau also forecasts impressive median salaries for environmental safety professionals with positions that have median salaries that range from $50,000 to $80,000.
“Thiel College has always been unique as an institution that combines the liberal arts and professional preparation. We believe this degree embodies that spirit and is the start of moving Thiel towards its next 100 years,” said Mark Marmo, president and CEO of suburban Pittsburgh-based Deep Well Services and a 1993 graduate of Thiel College. “Western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio are experiencing an industrial transformation. This degree puts Thiel at the forefront of environmental safety management and will give our graduates high earning and career growth potential regardless of the industry they choose to work in.”
Students can also choose from new programs in sports management, health systems, exercise science and equestrian studies or select from one of the College’s other 60-plus majors and minors. Thiel’s Career Development Center connects students in all academic pursuits to an extensive database of internship opportunities and engaged network of 15,000-plus alumni. The national Colleges of Distinction group recognized Thiel College for the third straight year as a College of Distinction. It also singled out Thiel’s Department of Education and Department of Business Administration & Accounting for their job and graduate placement rates, student-based focus and dedicated faculty.
Thiel is one of the top two most affordable private colleges in Pennsylvania, according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best National Liberal Arts Colleges. Thiel joins Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh and Princeton University as a Dietrich Foundation institution.

Modern Facilities
The new Haer Family Science and Arts Connector is named for alumni Fred Haer ’65 and his wife, Jill (Shackett) ’66. Their commitment to connecting science and the liberal arts was the vision that brought the building to fruition. The Haer Family Science and Arts Connector includes new classroom, collaborative, lab and meeting spaces. Students have access to modern research equipment in the new facility. The new building is one of the most popular destinations on campus for faculty, staff and students. The new track & field complex features a grass infield that increases student intramural and recreational opportunities. Since 2014, the College has added more than 100,000 square feet of academic, athletic and recreational space. The state-of-the-art James Pedas Communication Center has the distinction of being Thiel’s first green certified building. The Communication Center is home to classrooms, collaborative space, advanced television and radio studios, a 24-hour computer lab, and the commemorative Mr. Fred Rogers Room, named and decorated in honor of the iconic children’s television host.
